Growth Mindset

I had never heard about Carol Dweck or growth mindset.  The idea was very intruiging and I was interested in the scientific studies.  I can see where the growth-fixed mindset can apply to my own learning, where I've been focused on progress and where I only participated for the best grade.  My own biggest challenge in putting the growth mindset to practice is overcoming the idea that grades have the most importance on my future.  I would really like to put more attention on other things, such as my friendships and expanding my knowledge.

  1. Hi Lauren! I definitely also fall into the trap of feeling like grades are all-important, especially because they're so heavily stressed before college. Honestly, since I've gotten to OU it almost feels like some of my grade anxiety and fear of failure has transferred to a fear of not being involved enough, which is thankfully less impacted by a fixed mindset. It can be really hard to unlearn the idea that grades are everything, though, and I hope it's going well for you!

  2. Hi Lauren,

Like you and Taylor, I find myself overly wrapped up in my grades and placing a lot of my self-worth there. I have always been an overachiever and the “all A” type of student, and I really had to work through that when I got to college. I agree that the scientific data was really interesting, and honestly important to me whenever I was first reading about growth mindset. Now I think a growth mindset is a healthier alternative to fixed mindsets, but I am not sure how we as a society could make that switch.
